The Malaysian Society of Nephrology (MSN) in collaboration with the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (NKF) and the Ministry of Health, Malaysia marked the fifth World Kidney Day on March 11th 2010 by holding a roadshow over a number of days that primarily focused on the East Coast of Malaysia. There were also multiple events/activities organised at National, State and individual hospital levels, all with the common goal of raising awareness of kidney disease and the importance of early detection and prevention of kidney diseases. As the theme this year was “ Protect Your Kidneys, Control Diabetes”, many endocrinologists, local diabetes organizations such as Persatuan Diabetes Malaysia and dieticians gave important assistance in the activities.

Free Health Screening/Public Forums at selected public, private and university hospitals as well as large shopping complexes, office blocks. Most centres offered screening of urine for protein red blood cells, body mass index and waist circumference, blood pressure and dextrostix measurement. A few also offered serum cholesterol levels and one, fundal camera screening for patients with diabetes. |

Media publicity in print, radio and television. There were television and radio interviews given by different consultant nephrologists as well as announcements or coverage of planned activities throughout the country in leading local newspapers. |
In total, 5628 people were screened, 2494 attended public forums and 1027 healthcare professionals attended CME activities in conjunction with World Kidney Day. |
