A medical practitioner can request to be registered as a Nephrologist if the following requirements are fulfilled:
- A Recognized Basic Medical Degree
Holds a recognised basic medical degree and is registered with the Malaysian Medical Council
AND - A Postgraduate qualification in Internal Medicine recognized by the National Specialist Register of Malaysia (NSR)
AND - EITHER NSR registration in Internal Medicine OR at least 3 years of experience in Internal Medicine (in addition to Nephrology training)
AND - Completed Postgraduate Training in Nephrology
Local accredited training centres- Completion of a minimum of three years of Nephrology training in centres which fulfill the criteria stipulated by the Specialty Board of Nephrology under the supervision of Nephrologist trainers who fulfill the criteria stipulated by the Specialty Board;
AND - Evidence of satisfactory postgraduate training as supported by :
- Log book of core procedures AND
- Satisfactory supervisors’ reports on the core procedural skills and core competencies AND
- Supportive documents of training, if any AND
- Board of Nephrology (Malaysia) Exit Examination Certificate
AND
- Those who have satisfied their subspecialty training before year 2008, and worked at a Consultant level, is not required to sit for the Board of Nephrology (Malaysia) Exit Examination
Subspecialty training certification from overseas
- Completion of a minimum of three years of Nephrology training in centres which fulfill the criteria stipulated by the Specialty Board of Nephrology including general nephrology, dialysis and renal transplantation;
AND - Evidence of satisfactory postgraduate training as supported by :
- Log book of core procedures AND
- Satisfactory supervisors’ reports on the core procedural skills and core competencies AND
- Supportive documents of training, if any AND
- Certificate from American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) Diplomate, subspecialty Nephrology OR Certificate of completion of training (CCT) – Specialty: Renal Medicine (United Kingdom) OR Advanced physician training in Nephrology from Australia or New Zealand (Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians – FRACP)
AND

- Complete an attachment in an accredited centre in Malaysia for a duration of at least six months AND
- The duration of additional training will be decided by the Subcommittee and will be based on the applicant’s working experience in the specialty, duration of training undergone and core procedures that have been performed. Upon completion of the attachment, they should submit the log book and supervisor’s report. AND
- Satisfactory supervisors’ reports on the core procedural skills and core competencies AND
- Supportive documents of training, if any
Subspecialty training from Unrecognized Training centres
- Completion of a minimum of three years of Nephrology training which fulfill the criteria stipulated by the Specialty Board of Nephrology including general nephrology, dialysis and renal transplantation;
AND - Evidence of satisfactory postgraduate training as supported by :
- Log book of core procedures AND
- Satisfactory supervisors’ reports on the core procedural skills and core competencies AND
- Supportive documents of training, if any AND
- Board of Nephrology (Malaysia) Exit Examination Certificate
AND
- Local training in an accredited centre
- Complete an attachment in an accredited centre in Malaysia for a duration of at least six months AND
- The duration of additional training will be decided by the Subcommittee and will be based on the applicant’s working experience in the specialty, duration of training undergone and core procedures that have been performed. Upon completion of the attachment, they should submit the log book and supervisor’s report before sitting for the Board of Nephrology (Malaysia) Exit Examination. AND
- Satisfactory supervisors’ reports on the core procedural skills and core competencies AND
- Supportive documents of training, if any
- Completion of a minimum of three years of Nephrology training in centres which fulfill the criteria stipulated by the Specialty Board of Nephrology under the supervision of Nephrologist trainers who fulfill the criteria stipulated by the Specialty Board;
- Applicants who do not fulfill the criteria above would be considered on a case-to-case basis by the Specialty Board of Nephrology
