The Abu Bakar Suleiman (ABS) award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to the development of nephrology, dialysis and/or renal transplantation in Malaysia. Established in 2012, this award is to honor the father of nephrology in this country who has transformed the nephrology landscape of this country especially in the public sector.

Tan Sri Dato' Dr Abu Bakar Suleiman is the Society's first president and the first nephrologist in the Ministry of Health Malaysia. He introduced selfcare home and office haemodialysis and literally single handedly started the haemodialysis and renal transplant programme in this country.

  a. Nomination is open from September till December and the recipient of the ABS award will be announced during the annual congress of the society in the following year.
  b. A special selection committee headed by the president of the society will be formed to review all nominations. This selection committee may also propose nominations for this award. In the event that there is no nomination or the absent of an eligible candidate, the ABS award will not be awarded for that year.
  c. The ABS award consists a plaque, a certificate of recognition and a unrestricted grant of RM5,000
